It's a crime! (Or a mystery…)

Scandinavian Crime Authors on University Challenge

Earlier this week UK crime author Minette Walters made an appearance on the Christmas series edition of University Challenge for ‘graduates’.  (Some on twitter decided to tag it #geriatricunichall.)  Last night the series itself graduated to have a whole round of questions based on Scandinavian crime authors.

First up was the starter question with Jeremy Paxman asking for the identity of this ‘well known Nordic crime writer’.

Warwick tried and got it wrong with an offering of Stieg Larsson.

Then Sheffield could offer nothing so it was off to another starter question after Paxo identified the picture as one of Norwegian…

Jo Nesbø.

After correctly answering another starter question, the Warwick team was off with the bonus questions picture round based on ‘Swedish crime writers’, starting with this one.  Someone mentioned Per Wahlöö.  Someone said ‘It’s not Stieg Larsson.’  And another added, ‘No, he’s Danish isn’t he?’

They decided to go with their third suggestion, correctly naming…

Henning Mankell.

Then came this one.

‘It’s a woman’ said one.

They all agreed on this but could offer no name.

Thus, it was back to Paxo to put them out of their misery by identifying…

Liza Marklund.

Paxman threw out this one for identification and Warwick had more joy.  All were agreed – correctly – that this one was…

Stieg Larsson.

You can the episode on iplayer here and the one with Minette Walters here.

But before I go, does anyone think this is actor Clive Mantle in the audience at the end?

Maybe he was appearing in one of the other episodes?

Good point! I have not seen all episodes and I don’t think they’ve finished yet. Felt sure it was him…

    Who is Clive Mantle?

But even though it is not the best picture of Nesbø (have never seen him with so much hair before), I think I could have identified the Scandinavians 🙂

A British actor who used to be in successful TV series but who is now more on the stage. Could not resist this post as those in the know would inevitably find the comments of the team funny, I think. (Albeit, the Marklund did throw me…)
